What Is Neurofeedback?

When you walk past a mirror and see yourself slouching, what do you do? You correct your posture. The neurofeedback system is like a mirror for the brain; it reads brainwave patterns and offers corrections when irregularities are detected. When the brain deviates from “optimal” rhythms, the neurofeedback system alerts the brain through interruptions in music. Just as rumble strips along the highway keep drivers in their lane, neurofeedback trains the brain to maintain regular rhythms for maximum function.

What To Expect During a Neurofeedback Session

A typical neurofeedback session lasts 33 minutes. A therapist or trained technician will place 5 electrodes on your head to track your brain activity. A conductive paste is used to ensure that the electrodes stay in place through the session. Headphones are provided for listening to the audio feedback.

The session begins when meditation music begins to play. If you listen closely you will notice short pauses or skips in the music— this is the feedback that trains your brain when the electrodes detect irregular rhythms in your brain activity. No physical sensations are involved in neurofeedback.

You are welcome to read, study or simply relax; your brain will still pick up breaks in the music even if you are not focusing on the music. We also offer a small selection of movies with the same pause or skip in audio when the neurofeedback system detects an irregularity.

What Results Can I Expect From Neurofeedback Treatments?

Like any other psychological treatment, results of neurofeedback vary from person to person. Some clients report improvement after the first treatment; others don’t notice change until after completing a few sessions. All clients are given a questionnaire to fill out before and after each neurofeedback session. As time goes on, we will use those questionnaires along with your perceptions to track your progress and determine whether or not you are benefiting from treatment.

We recommend completing 10-20 neurofeedback sessions in order for the results to last long-term; the more sessions completed, the longer-lasting the effects will be, however you are welcome to discontinue treatment at any time. If you have completed your treatment plan and find yourself in need of a tune-up we will be happy to schedule you for another neurofeedback session as often as you’d like.

Neurofeedback is not addictive and does not lead to dependency.
